Subject: The current political scene - and what happens next.
Nick Brown, former government chief whip and agriculture secretary, gave a tour d'horizon of the current political scene and his own view of the future direction of the Government.
The meeting was followed by a drinks and canapé reception.
The Rt. Hon. Nick Brown MP has been Member of Parliament for Newcastle East and Wallsend since 1983. In 1995 he was appointed Deputy Chief Whip and played a central role in the close of that Parliament. After Labour's election victory in 1997, he was appointed Government Chief Whip, becoming Secretary of State for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in 1998. He has also served as Minister for Work in the Department for Work and Pensions. Although he left the Government in 2003 he remains an active Member of Parliament and is widely known to be a close ally of the Chancellor, Gordon Brown.
